Would You Wait For Them?

I spoke with this young man on a Wednesday evening. He came across as very charming, sensitive and self-aware. He wanted some advice regarding a girl he had developed feelings for.  In this exchange he is “Protective Loaf” and I am “Like Rifle”.

There are many obstacles that can get in the way of a relationship developing. He was of the understanding that despite his feelings towards her, it would be difficult to make this work.

He was able to open up to her about his feelings which I admired. He had taken the first step in coming to a solution regarding the status of their relationship by having this open and honest communication.

I suggested he continue to give her space having spoken his mind; to give her that time to digest what he had said and to give her that time to consider what it is she truly wants as well.

He brought up the issue of waiting for her; what if he met someone else in the meantime? What if he fell in love with someone else in the meantime?

I told him to continue to live his life; whilst he has feelings for this girl, it is unfair that he put his whole future and the potential of any happiness on hold.

He expressed his concern for not wanting to hurt her; he was conflicted between waiting for her, protecting her whilst at the same time continuing with his life and building his own memories.

I continued to encourage his honest and heartfelt communication with her. I felt that he should tell her all of this; to ensure that they were on the same page. If they created this mutual understanding then it would reduce the chance of him hurting her. Indeed, it would reduce the chance of either of them getting hurt.
